Our Vision
We envision a music industry that values a level playing field and strives to give an equal voice to all people.

The music industry has long struggled with gender inequality, and yet there’s still a lack of accessible, artist-level data that shows just how deep the imbalance runs. Chartmetric’s Make Music Equal initiative aims to help change that by building a dataset focused on the self-declared pronouns of artists — a starting point for understanding who is (and isn’t) being represented.
While pronouns don’t always align perfectly with gender identity, they offer a publicly available, artist-defined way to begin tracking gender equity across the industry. By analyzing this data at scale, the project highlights the gender gaps that persist in everything from festival lineups to streaming playlists. Our goal is to make the problem visible — because what gets measured gets changed.

artists from 230 countries and territories
We group artists into six tiers to reflect their footprint in the music world. At the top are the Legendary—icons who’ve been shaping music for over 30 years. Superstars are today’s household names who have released music in the past three decades. The Mainstream tier features well-known acts with wide appeal. Mid-Level and Developing artists are new talents gaining momentum, and then we have Undiscovered—millions of creators waiting to be heard.
